Small Scale Solutions for Eroding Stream Banks: Infoshop with Mountain Valleys Resource Conservation & Development Council
April 17, 2025 at 5:30-7p
@ Peace Gardens & Market, 47 Bryant St, AVL, 28806
Healing Roots Design is partnering with Mountain Valleys Resource Conservation & Development to share about vital bioremediation methods for stream banks. We have all seen how rainfall from Hurricane Helene eroded waterways throughout this region, and the impact of losing 30-40% of the forest canopy across the region means that further erosion is bound to occur. Trees are like lakes, they sink water. Without as many trees, more water will be flowing into waterways.
Mountain Valleys RC&D offers a grant-funded program to assist homeowners in remediating eroded stream banks called “Shade Your Stream.” They will be presenting information about this program and the method involved in streambank restoration at the infoshop. There will be a demonstration of the materials and tools used and a discussion for those who want to do it yourself, as well as an opportunity to apply for the “Shade Your Stream” program.
The massive amount of debris from windfall and flooding from Helene has also created a huge fire risk, which all lived through in late March when massive wildfires erupted around the Green River Gorge and Table Rock. In light of this, there will also be a presentation about wildfire risks and what we can do to mitigate them. Mountain Valleys RC&D has a program called “Firewise,” which provides resources and education about reducing wildfire risk around private homes.

This is such a game changer in my life. I now get to commune with nature and my favorite plants everyday. To come home to beauty ... it won't get old. Working with Keri and Healing Roots Design moved me out of a place of stuckness with my front yard. The family loves it and I feel so inspired at home." ~ Melissa L.
