Healing Roots Design (HRD) is seeking 3-4 experienced and motivated individuals to join our growing team as Field Staff, starting April 1st.
Job Title: Field Staff - Landscaping
Reports to: Field Lead and/or Operations Manager
Job Summary:
Field Staff will assist with the installation, maintenance, and management of landscaping projects, following permaculture principles. They will work under the direction of the Field Lead to perform various tasks including planting, weeding, mulching, soil conditioning, irrigation, and hardscaping. This role requires hands-on labor, knowledge of sustainable landscaping techniques, and a spirited passion for working outdoors in diverse conditions.

The standard hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, though the work schedule may vary depending on season, employee’s duties, or client needs. Employees are expected to meet commitments and deadlines and may have to extend work hours. We expect employees to be ready and available during stated work hours and, if they have extra time in their workday, to assist their coworkers who may need help.

Job Title: Field Staff - Landscaping

Job Summary:

They will work under the direction of the Field Lead to perform various tasks including planting, weeding, mulching, soil conditioning, irrigation, and hardscaping. This role requires hands-on labor, knowledge of sustainable landscaping techniques, and a spirited passion for working outdoors in diverse conditions.
Key Roles & Responsibilities:
- Landscaping Installation & Stewardship:
- Perform planting, pruning, mulching, and general garden maintenance tasks.
- Assist with soil preparation, composting, and mulching using permaculture practices.
- Install and maintain irrigation systems, rainwater catchment, and other water conservation techniques.
- Assist in the installation of hardscaping elements such as pathways, raised beds, and garden structures.
- Apply organic fertilizers and pest management solutions as instructed.
- Sustainable Practices:
- Follow permaculture principles in all tasks, including soil regeneration, biodiversity, and water conservation.
- Implement sustainable design elements, such as swales, hugelkultur beds, and other earthworks.
- Assist in the care of native plants, edible gardens, and food forests.
- Practice waste reduction by composting and recycling materials.
- Team Support:
- Work closely with Field Leads and other team members to complete projects efficiently.
- Maintain equipment and tools in good working order, report any issues to the Field Lead.
- Follow daily instructions and communicate effectively with team members.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Follow safety guidelines and wear protective gear as required.
- Assist in maintaining a safe, organized, and clean work site.
- Attend safety briefings and training sessions as needed.
- Client Relations:
- Maintain professionalism when interacting with clients and the public.
- Respect client property and adhere to company policies regarding behavior on-site.
- Previous experience in landscaping, horticulture, or permaculture is a plus.
- Strong understanding of or willingness to learn permaculture principles and sustainable practices.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks safely, including lifting heavy objects, digging, and operating tools.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Positive attitude and a strong work ethic.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license is preferred. Project area encompasses 25 min around Asheville, though projects may be further depending on location. Carpooling is encouraged.
- This role involves working outdoors in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, and rain, and around thorny plants and poison ivy, occasionally.
- Physical requirements include standing, walking, bending, lifting, and operating machinery and tools for extended periods.
- Rare weekend or extended hours.
- Healing Roots is hiring 2 full time and 1-2 part time Field employees for the 2025 Season.
- Full time is 32.5 hours to 40 hours a week.
- Part time is 19-26 hours a week.
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience, time with HRD, and commitment level.
- Pay may include mileage reimbursement, PTO and holidays depending on employee classification.
