Key Roles & Responsibilities:
Landscaping Installation & Stewardship:
- Perform planting, pruning, mulching, and general garden maintenance tasks.
- Assist with soil preparation, composting, and mulching using permaculture practices.
- Install and maintain irrigation systems, rainwater catchment, and other water conservation techniques.
- Assist in the installation of hardscaping elements such as pathways, raised beds, and garden structures.
- Apply organic fertilizers and pest management solutions as instructed.
- Follow permaculture principles in all tasks, including soil regeneration, biodiversity, and water conservation.
- Implement sustainable design elements, such as swales, hugelkultur beds, and other earthworks.
- Assist in the care of native plants, edible gardens, and food forests.
- Practice waste reduction by composting and recycling materials.
- Work closely with Field Leads and other team members to complete projects efficiently.
- Maintain equipment and tools in good working order, report any issues to the Field Lead.
- Follow daily instructions and communicate effectively with team members.
- Follow safety guidelines and wear protective gear as required.
- Assist in maintaining a safe, organized, and clean work site.
- Attend safety briefings and training sessions as needed.
- Maintain professionalism when interacting with clients and the public.
- Respect client property and adhere to company policies regarding behavior on-site.
- Previous experience/leadership in landscaping, hardscaping, horticulture, or permaculture is a plus.
- Strong understanding of or willingness to learn permaculture principles and sustainable practices.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks safely, including lifting heavy objects, digging, and operating tools.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Positive attitude and a strong work ethic.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- A valid driver’s license is required. Project area encompasses 25 min around Asheville, though projects may be further depending on location. Carpooling is encouraged.
- This role involves working outdoors in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, and rain, and around thorny plants and poison ivy, occasionally.
- Physical requirements include standing, walking, bending, lifting, and operating machinery and tools for extended periods.
- Rare weekend or extended hours.

Job Summary:
Landscaping Installation & Stewardship:
- Installation of hardscaping elements including pathways, patios, walls, steps, retaining walls, raised beds, and garden structures (arbors, trellises, fences, gates, handrails, etc.) according to designs and in collaboration with Project Lead.
- Site Preparation: Excavate, grade, and prepare the ground for hardscape features. Projects are often integrated with plant installations.
- Drainage: Consider and incorporate water management strategies and materials in all projects
- Equipment Operation: Proficiently operate machinery (skid steer and excavator), grinder, masonry saws, jackhammers, carpentry tools, and a broad range of hand tools.
- Material Handling: Cut, shape, and set natural stone and manufactured concrete pavers, blocks, or edging. Load, unload, and install gravels, road bond, sands, river rounds, concrete/cement/portland, soil, and mulch. Use of dimensional and roundwood lumber, as required. Use of rebar, metal edging and other metal materials, as required.
Sustainable Practices:
- Follow permaculture principles in all tasks, including soil improvement, supporting biodiversity, and water conservation
- Implement sustainable design elements.
- Assist in the care of native plants, edible gardens, and food forests around the land we are working.
- Practice waste reduction by composting and recycling, when applicable.
Team Support and Collaboration:
- Work closely with Designer, Field Leads, Project Leads, and other team members to complete projects efficiently.
- Define and uphold quality standards and processes for project implementation.
- Maintain vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order, report any issues to the Field Lead.
- Follow and give daily instructions and communicate effectively with team members.
- Future opportunity to be involved with consulting, design, estimating, and leading projects.
Safety & Compliance:
- Follow safety guidelines and wear protective gear, as required.
- Assist in maintaining a safe, organized, and clean work site.

Required Qualifications and Experience:
- 5-10+ years experience in hardscaping, earthworks, and/or masonry
- 5-10+ years landscaping, horticulture, or permaculture.
- Strong understanding of or willingness to learn permaculture principles and sustainable practices.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks safely, including lifting heavy objects, digging, and operating tools. Have physical stamina.
- Ability to read blueprints/plans and understand elevations.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Positive attitude and a strong work ethic.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license is required. Project area encompasses 25 min around Asheville, though projects may be further depending on location. Carpooling is encouraged.

Working Conditions:

Compensation:
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
- Pay may include mileage reimbursement, PTO and holidays depending on employee classification.
